Last week I attended the Tech-Conference of Amazon Web Services – AWS re:Invent 2017 in Las Vegas. It lasted five days, a period of time that is not always easy to take off from your daily work. Following are the most important pieces of content from my perspective in 7-10 min for reading.

Serverless, Machine Learning, the Machine Learning Camera DeepLens, Alexa for Business and Kube as a managed service are the main highlights of this year’s re:Invent. By extending and making existing and established services such as EC2, S3, Glacier or DynamoDB more flexible, AWS helps customers to map many requirements directly in the managed service and reduce the need for workaround implementations. It will be fascinating and at times frightening, what will be possible in the future due to the combination of these powerful services.

In meinem letzten Blog-Beitrag »Digitale Transformation ist mehr als nur IT« habe ich darüber geschrieben, dass sich erfreulicherweise eine ganzheitlichere Sichtweise auf die Digitale Transformation durchsetzt. Wir wissen, dass IT alleine nicht die Lösung ist. Langsam macht sich die Erkenntnis breit, dass die Digitale Transformation somit nicht nur die IT-Abteilung, sondern alle Unternehmensbereiche betrifft. Schaut man sich aktuelle Trainings- und Beratungsangebote an, gewinnt man allerdings einen anderen Eindruck: Unter dem Deckmantel der Digitalen Transformation wird zunächst über die Herausforderungen in der heutigen Geschäftswelt gesprochen – »Agilität« oder »neue Geschäftsmodelle« tauchen als wichtige Schlüsselwörter auf. Es werden bekannte, ehemals erfolgreiche Unternehmen genannt, die den Weg in die Digitalisierung nicht geschafft haben. Im nächsten Schritt werden schließlich neuartige IT-Verfahren und Technologien wie Cloud Computing, MicroServices, DevOps und BigData als Lösungen auf die Herausforderungen unserer Zeit präsentiert. Häufig wird IT-Abteilungen jedoch nicht zugetraut, dass sie solche modernen Lösungen problemlos einführen können.

Ab dem 25. Mai 2018 tritt die Neuregelung des Datenschutzrechtes in der Europäische Union GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation oder in Deutschland EU-Datenschutz-Grundverordnung) in Kraft. Diese enthält zahlreiche Änderungen sowie neue Regelungen und Unternehmen müssen sich damit auseinandersetzen um letztlich Risiken zu minimieren.
Wird dieses Thema vernachlässigt oder gar missachtet drohen Strafen von bis zu 4% des jährlichen Unternehmensumsatzes oder bis zu 20 Mio. EUR, je nachdem welcher Wert größer ist.
Möglicherweise geraten viele europäische aber auch im Ausland befindliche Unternehmen, welche in Handelsbeziehungen mit Europa stehen hier in größere Schwierigkeiten. Glaubt man aktuellen Umfragen, denkt etwa knapp die Hälfte der deutschen Unternehmen, dass sie teilweise oder gar nicht in der Lage sein werden, die neuen Anforderungen der EU bis zum Stichtag umzusetzen.

Cloud-Computing ist in den letzten Jahren zu einem der wichtigsten Themen in der IT  geworden. Es hat die Phase des Hypes lange verlassen und kann zu Recht als eine etablierte Technologie  bezeichnet werden, die viele Vorteile in sich vereinigt. So kann das Konzept, IT-Ressourcen nicht mehr dediziert in der eigenen Organisation vorzuhalten, sondern nach Nutzung zu bezahlen zu hohen Einsparungen, mehr Kostentransparenz und besserer Kalkulierbarkeit führen. In der Regel bieten diese extern hinzugezogenen Ressourcen auch den Vorteil, immer auf dem letzten Stand der Technik zu sein, womit eine begleitende Wartung wie in der konventionellen IT entfällt.

A key driving factor in the life science and pharmaceutical industry is the possibility to handle large volumes of data in order to access, manage and analyze the data. To be able to gain business efficiency and a good performance, the drug development needs to take place in a best time to market relationship. Therefore, more completed clinical trials are necessary in a shortened timeframe. An acceleration in the drug development leads to an improved drug pipeline, less costs and faster product releases and therefore better profitability.

I’ve been in the Document Management System (DMS) / Enterprise Content Management System (ECMS) market for more than 20 years. Sometimes very focused on a specific aspect e.g. Technical Documentation, sometimes more general e.g. ECMS platform and sometimes with focus on an industry segment e.g. Life Science. I have seen a lot of vendors, products and technologies coming and going. The latest acquisition and certainly the biggest one was just a week ago. Hopefully, this will not reduce the power of innovation.

Exponential data growth rates make the management of content an enormous challenge for organizations. Terms like »information overload« and »content chaos« express the inefficient situation regarding content management on an enterprise-wide scale. Employees search for documents in different versions, languages and formats across various repositories and systems through the entire company. However, these documents contain important and decision-relevant information that are becoming a key business resource. Moreover, compliance with statutory regulations and technical requirements with respect to storing huge amounts of data are complicated.

Mobile apps and Big Data are important topics, which are more and more relevant in the Life Science Industry. New media is available on a global base. That’s the reason why people and companies have to adapt their processes to this new digital age. People search for information on the internet and often trust blogs or forums more than the old fashioned ways. For medical problems they do not only trust doctors, but inform themselves on the web. The new social media has big influence on the ways on how information is provided and received. Also the way of interactive information exchange has changed. Formulas are used in a digital way, either on websites or also on mobile apps. Therefore data has to be accessed in a global way. Mobile apps are used outside of secure networks; therefore, also the related data has to be stored secure in a global way, which allows access from the internet.

Although both industries – Discrete Manufacturing and Process Manufacturing – are completely different, I see some similarities.
10 years ago, the only competitive threat for a traditional OEM came from another traditional OEM. All R&D Managers had an arrogant smile on the face when they heard about a small US company, which was entering the market with electric cars. Today this company – Tesla – is also an established player. But new competitors do appear on the horizon: Apple, Google, Uber and others. Companies with no knowledge about how to build, sell and maintain a car. Why is this possible?

In order to provide services aimed at both individuals and target groups, companies need to collect user-, application-, and product-driven data from the real world as a basis, then submit this data to further analytic processing.

Companies can now bridge the gap between the real world and the digital world using the mechanisms and principles of the Internet of Things (IoT) or the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT or Industry 4.0). Standardized device networking and individual opportunities for interaction are now available for a wide range of uses – they open up new possibilities and expand fields of business.
